China's new way to track Tibetans in exile
China has adopted a new method to keep an eye on Tibetans
living in exile. For this, China is capturing the phones of people living in
Tibet. China believes that people living in Tibet are in contact with people
who are in exile. Tibetans in Dragayab County and Chamdo, which have contacts
of people in exile, have reportedly been ordered to install spyware on their
cell phones to keep a close eye on them.
Spy spyware is a new surveillance tactic used by Chinese
authorities. According to Tibet Watch, a Dharamsala-based research group, local
sources in Tibet have confirmed the use of cell phone spyware that actively
monitors contact Tibetans in exile.
Pema Gyal, a researcher at Tibet Watch, told news portal
Fayul: "China has aggressively implemented the use of software on the
phones of the individuals concerned. Local sources in Tibet have told us that
whatever they do on their phones, The authorities are monitoring the situation.
The situation has become highly sensitive in these areas. From 2017 to 2021,
what has happened now is that even families are finding it difficult to contact
their loved ones. Now the government has to track anyone. There is also doubt,
who has any contact outside."
"There have also been instances where Chinese officials
had arrived in monasteries to warn monks that if they had information that
could put them in danger, let them know. This is just one example.
Monitoring," he said. The border has reached every part of Tibet. It is
nothing beyond my own imagination, it is real."
The researcher also emphasized that Tibetans face fear under
such a regime. The report shows, "anyone found with photos and videos of
people deemed "politically sensitive" by police officers and
contacting Tibetans living outside Tibet could be arbitrarily sent for two to
three months. He was also kept under observation upon release.
